Cara Connors
CARA CONNORS’ acclaimed solo show Straight for Pay successfully completed a 30-city tour & explores her journey of leaving her marriage, embracing her sexuality and occasional feral existence as a queer, millennial comedian chasing her dreams while making up for lost time.
If you had to describe STRAIGHT FOR PAY in adjectives or descriptive words only, what would they be?
Chaotic, emotional, physical, FUNNY.
Is there a moment, bit, or joke from your show that gets the biggest audience reaction? What kind of absurdity do we get to see during your shows?
It definitely varies depending on the audience, which is one of my favorite parts. But I definitely think my Parent Trap bit tends to be a moment that really brings the audience together. My whole show probably falls under the absurd category. It's straight stand up, but with lots of different characters and voices coming in and out and a pretty distinctly unhinged style that's hopefully exciting for UK audiences.
If you had an unlimited budget to produce a film about your life, what would it look like?
I think it would look like a cross between But, I'm a Cheerleader and Barbie if it was told from Weird Barbie's perspective and then I would hire all my favorite people and friends and pay them really, really well.
What is next for you, after Fringe? What are you hoping to do, create or write in 2024?
After Fringe, my number one priority is getting back to my sweet pups, Billie and Pierre, because I’ve missed them so terribly. After that, I will get my weekly queer showcase show in LA, also called Straight for Pay, up and running again after taking a hiatus to come to Scotland. I am hoping to sell my stand up special to a big streamer, work towards my next hour, and write a full length sketch show with my girlfriend called Not a Comedy Couple.
Can you tell us about some other female-driven shows you've seen at Fringe this year that you would recommend checking out?
An Evening of Mayhem with Meg Stalter at Gilded Balloon is an absolute joy and whirlwind of a show. Meg is such a force on stage and it's incredible to watch her and her guitarist/fellow comic Maddie Ballard perform together. True tears of laughter at every show. I also got a chance to see Chloe Petts stand up as well! A true gem and such sharp writing. Really enjoyed her show.
