Your show is titled "I Don't Trust Adults," which feels self-explanatory. How did this become the central theme for your show?
I initially wrote the show without the title in mind, but with the intent to tell the stories of certain adults I felt scorned by throughout my childhood (I have never gotten over anything ever etc). Now, the title is a huge part of the actual show!
How does this performance feel different from your past work? Have you learned anything about yourself in the development process?
I’m learning how much to talk about being a theater kid and how much to pull back, which is also a lifelong journey. I’ve been doing stand up since I was 12, and this is my first hour-long show. There’s so much context to be given. While the show is still stand up, I’m telling jokes through storytelling, as opposed to my usual set-up punchline run of general-Ruby-topics.
How do you think the comedy industry is changing? What have you noticed about the business that up & coming comedians and creators should know?
I think the definition of success is constantly changing for the better in comedy. There’s not just one path to success anymore. Sometimes that path entails getting mean DMs from people who still use Snapchat filters. But we prevail!
What's your ultimate dream? What would creative fulfillment and success look like to you?
Literally such a good question. I would also love to know what my true fulfillment looks like. My dream has always been to build my own little comedy empire, where I make TV shows and specials and am never unemployed ever.
Are there any upcoming shows, events or performances that you're really looking forward to seeing? Anything your friends or peers are doing, that you recommend we check out?
I’ve seen SO many incredible solo shows this year. I will never stop recommending Sam Morrison’s Sugar Daddy. Caroline Baniewicz is doing her hour at Little Fields that anyone in New York should absolutely attend.
